Yesterday, we hosted another guest lecture together with de Merkplaats®. Fifteen American students of the Elon Law School and several American startups joined us as guests for Rockstart in the lovely building ‘De Zonnewyser’, across the way from our office, to learn more about intellectual property law.
The guest lecture was part of a ‘Meetup’ titled ‘Law for Innovation / Innovation for Law’.
This Meetup is an initiative of Zebra Legal and Jack Hicks, professor at Elon University School of Law in North Carolina. Also attending were policymakers of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and Daryl Reeve, a reviser at Shandong University in China.
Several lectures were held throughout the day, and students had the opportunity to ask questions to the startups that were present.
Alphons Geerlings, LLM and Sam van den Berg discussed trademark law, het copyright law and the important role played by Donald Duck in patent law, among other issues. They also gave out Doppers®, registered with CC Proof, to students who gave a correct answer to a question or who posed an interesting question themselves.
‘I felt today was the most rewarding day yet. Listening and learning from lawyers in Amsterdam was very informative. Their presentations were interactive and a good variety. The Local Law Firm presentations [de Merkplaats] were good because they were interactive yet we learned a lot.”

Looking back, the day – which ended with drinks at The Hoxton Hotel in Amsterdam – was a great success.
